The Cloud Podcast
Technology is supposed to work for us. So, why do we work longer and harder after each technological leap? The Cloud answers this question by diving below the surface on technologies that make an impact on our lives. At the end of every episode, you’ll wonder if technology is truly the answer to our problems. Each episode begins with a premise about a specific technology and explores if the technology delivers on its promises.

STEM Programming Isn’t the Answer

It seems like Will is always getting into a fight with a teacher (or parent) about the over emphasis on STEM education. In this episode, we host Pamela Sharpe, M. Ed., the "Imposter Eraser" explore the current trend of STEM at all costs education, the rise of STEAM, and ask, whatever happened to the button guy?

Will's Personal Thoughts
My personal opinions on STEM is that there is an over emphasis on trying to get kids to code in preparation for future jobs, versus focusing in on the basics of math and problem solving.I'd also like to debate the idea of how many STEM jobs and engineering jobs didn't exist when we were kids and how technology has created many industries that aren't even STEM related in the design, marketing, and other fields and how we don't focus in those areas. It would be great if we can explore the concepts of how we have tendency to prepare for the future by focusing on today. I'm a technologist, and right now we write code that writes code.
What happens when a large percentage of the population is preparing for a STEM career when those jobs disappear thanks to AI, automation, and toolkits. It's a conundrum I like to call "the button guy." At the turn of the 20th century, plastic buttons for shirts we made using molds and there was a guy who'd press a lever to cut the buttons from the mold.
It didn't take long to introduce automation and that job disappeared.
I often ask questions, well, "what about the button guy," when it comes to STEM.
The languages and techniques we were using 5 years ago no longer apply in this field, and we generate more and more code using automated means versus writing it from scratch.
The button guy needs to focus on problem solving, design, and collaboration when STEM is commodified.

It seems like everyone is trading cryptocurrencies these days. Everyone from Elon Musk to your grandmother are praising the benefits of cryptocurrencies but what are people really trading? 60% of Americans own cryptocurrencies in exchange for their hard earned cash. We're joined by Cleve Mesidor, Director of the National Policy Network for Women of Color in Blockchain and explore whether or not cryptocurrencies are hype, or if they're the future of money.

You will not hear a smarter conversation on the impact artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms have on communities of color. Will is joined by Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Equitable Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Systems at Morgan State University, Dr. Kofi Nyarko and the CEO of Progressive Heuristics, Gabriella Waters.
Will, Gabriella, and Dr. Nyarko break down artificial intelligence and machine learning by discussing how AI/ML is used to solve complex, real world problems, and bias may affect the outcomes these technologies deliver to communities of color. The trio also proposes ways of minimizing the affects of bias and shares ways these techniques bring about positive change.

What Happened To Smart Cities?
Wednesday Jun 01, 2022
Wednesday Jun 01, 2022
Will speaks with Dr. Nick Maynard, Co-Founder and CEO of US Ignite. US Ignite collaborates with smart communities and research testbeds to drive high-impact solutions to their toughest challenges.
The Question: Whatever happened to the promise of smart cities in North America? With much fanfare Google announced plans to build the Quayside project in Toronto. A smart city featuring self-driving cars, Internet as a top-level utility along with gas, water, and light, and public-private data partnership empowering citizens with how their city is actually using resources. Other global cities have built smart city and innovation center projects in Slovenia, Russia, Spain, and China. I actually spent a little time in Internet City in Dubai. Smart cities are nothing new, Walt Disney famously planned the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT) as a blueprint for the future. There’s always been a desire, but we’ve always come up short. Why has it been so elusive to build smart cities in North America? Whatever happened to the smart city?

Transcript:
Will: Hello? Hello. Hey, what's up? What's up? What's up?
Sabrina: So you're doing this new show called The Cloud?
Will: Yes, the Cloud really excited about it. We're going to talk about whether or not any of this technology is legit. Yeah. Whether or not any of this stuff is hype or if it's really delivering.
Sabrina: Like what?
Will: You ever wondered what happened to smart cities? I've been to a smart city, and I can't get a smart city in my own country.
Sabrina: I do wonder what happened to it.
Will: Well, we're going to talk about that first.
Sabrina: Okay. What else?
Will: So, you know, you got Common out here on TV swinging AI. But how does AI impact communities of color? We're going to talk about that and talk about equitable AI.
Sabrina: You know what I want to know?
Will: What? What do you want to know?
Sabrina: So Crypto has crashed to the floor and people are still trying to hype it up. Is it a scam?
Will: Are you asking me?
Sabrina: Is it?
Will: Well, maybe not. If you weren't really in a crypto project, you're not going to get rich. Let's just say that. But there are some really good blockchain tech out there making these things work.
Sabrina: You know what else? It's 2022, and I still don't have a Rosie the robot cleaning up after me. What happened to that?
Will: You know what? They're actually on the way. Maybe in ten years. But it is harder to get that domestic bot than FINBOTS.
Sabrina: You know what? That doesn't surprise me. What about the future of health care?
Will: What about it?
Sabrina: I'm asking you.
Will: A lot of people have to come together to fix the health issue. Technology can't fix everything, but we can make good progress if people work together with the right tech.
Sabrina: All right. I know you have this thing about Stem.
Will: Yeah, I got a beef about Stem.
Sabrina: But you work in Stem. Your life is Stem.
Will: And all this programming on Stem is misguided. It's a family show. It's a family commercial. It's Misguided as AF. Steam is a better idea. I'll talk about that. And the button guy on that episode.
Sabrina: You know what else I want to know?
Will: What? What you want to know?
Sabrina: You know. When am I going to get my flying car?
Will: You know what? That's also closer than you think. I was at this party a couple of weeks ago and I was talking to this guy.
Sabrina: All right, save it for the show. Save it for the show. All right.
